ConditionsWhat we help with
Here's what each problem can feel like, what usually causes it, and how chiropractic care may help. Each section also lists signs that mean you should see a medical doctor first. Dr. Carter treats all of these in your home or workplace.
Your spine, region by region
The spine has 24 movable vertebrae stacked in three curves, sitting on the sacrum. Discs between the vertebrae act as cushions, and nerves branch out at every level. When joints get stiff or muscles get irritated, the pain often shows up close by, though nerve irritation can send it down an arm or leg.
Common causes of back, neck, and joint pain
Most pain has more than one cause. Finding which of these are involved is what the first exam is for.
Stiff, restricted joints
Joints in the spine and pelvis that don't move well can ache and make the muscles around them tighten up.
Muscle strain and spasm
Overworked or suddenly loaded muscles get sore and can lock up to protect the area.
Disc problems
The cushions between vertebrae can bulge or wear down and press on nearby nerves.
Nerve irritation
A pinched or irritated nerve can send pain, numbness, or tingling into an arm or leg.
Posture and repetitive strain
Hours at a desk, behind the wheel, or doing the same motion load the same tissues over and over.
Injuries and accidents
Car crashes, falls, and sports injuries can strain ligaments and muscles, sometimes days before you feel it.
Pregnancy and body changes
Hormones, weight, and a shifting center of gravity put new demands on the back and pelvis.
Age-related changes
Joint wear and thinning discs make the spine stiffer, especially first thing in the morning.
Low back pain
Pain across the lower back from lifting, bending, sitting for long stretches, or waking up stiff.
What it can feel like
- A dull ache or sharp pain across the low back
- Stiffness that's worst in the morning or after sitting
- Pain when bending, lifting, or getting out of a car
- Muscle spasm or a feeling that your back might "give out"
Common causes
- Lifting or twisting with poor mechanics
- Long hours sitting at a desk or behind the wheel
- Weekend projects after a sedentary week
- Weak or deconditioned core and hip muscles
How chiropractic care may help
After an exam to find which joints and muscles are involved, care may include spinal adjustments, soft tissue work, and simple exercises to do at home. You'll also get practical advice on sitting, lifting, and sleeping so the same thing is less likely to come back.

Common causes
- Stiff joints in the upper neck
- Forward head posture at a desk

Sciatica and leg pain
Pain, numbness, or tingling that starts in the low back or buttock and travels down the leg.
Request a visitWhat it can feel like
- Pain that runs from the buttock down the back of the leg
- Numbness or pins and needles in the leg or foot
- Pain that's worse with sitting or coughing
- One side affected more than the other
Common causes
- Irritation of a nerve root in the low back
- A bulging or herniated disc
- Tight muscles deep in the hip
- Long periods of sitting
How chiropractic care may help
The first job is finding where the irritation is coming from. Care may include adjustments, gentle movement work, and positions and exercises that ease pressure on the nerve. Dr. Carter will also check your strength and reflexes so any changes are caught early. Since he comes to you, there's no long car ride to aggravate it.
Get medical care right away if you have
- Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the groin area
- Weakness in a leg or foot that's getting worse, such as foot drop
- Symptoms in both legs
- Leg pain with fever
Pregnancy back and pelvic pain
Low back, hip, and pelvic pain that builds as your body changes during pregnancy and in the months after delivery.
Request a visitWhat it can feel like
- A low back ache that grows as the pregnancy progresses
- Pain at the back of the pelvis or deep in the buttocks
- Pain over the pubic bone at the front, worse when walking, climbing stairs, or rolling over in bed
- Sciatica-type pain that travels into a leg
Common causes
- The hormone relaxin loosens ligaments around the pelvis
- A growing belly shifts your center of gravity and deepens the curve of the low back
- Weight gain and stretched, weaker abdominal muscles
- Sleeping positions and carrying toddlers or car seats
How chiropractic care may help
Care during pregnancy is adapted for you and the baby, with positioning that takes pressure off your belly (side-lying or special cushions) and gentler techniques. It often includes advice on sleep positions, support belts, and safe stretches. And because he comes to you, there's no driving or sitting in a car when you're uncomfortable. Let your OB or midwife know you're seeing a chiropractor, especially if your pregnancy is high-risk.
Get medical care right away if you have
- Vaginal bleeding or fluid leaking
- Back pain that comes and goes in a regular rhythm, or cramping, which can be a sign of labor
- Fever, or burning when you urinate
- A severe headache, vision changes, or sudden swelling of your face or hands
- Pain, warmth, or swelling in one calf
Car accident injuries and whiplash
Neck pain, stiffness, and headaches after a crash, even a low-speed one. Symptoms often show up hours or days later.
Request a visitWhat it can feel like
- Neck pain and stiffness that gets worse the next day
- Headaches starting at the base of the skull
- Pain across the shoulders and upper back
- Low back pain from the seat belt and impact
- Trouble concentrating or feeling foggy
Common causes
- The head snaps back and forth faster than muscles can react
- Rear-end collisions, even at low speed
- Sprained ligaments and strained muscles in the neck
- Bracing for impact
How chiropractic care may help
After confirming nothing needs emergency care or imaging first, care may include gentle mobilization, soft tissue work, and exercises that rebuild strength and motion as you heal. Florida's no-fault (PIP) insurance generally requires you to get initial treatment within 14 days of a crash, so don't wait. With a home visit, you won't have to drive while you're hurting. Call to ask about accident claims and billing.
Get medical care right away if you have
- Severe neck pain right after a crash, or pain when you move your head at all
- Loss of consciousness, confusion, or vomiting
- Numbness, tingling, or weakness in an arm or leg
- Trouble walking, speaking, or seeing
Pinched nerve and arm pain
Pain, numbness, or tingling that starts in the neck and travels to the shoulder blade, arm, or hand.
Request a visitWhat it can feel like
- Sharp or burning pain from the neck into an arm
- Numbness or pins and needles in the fingers
- A weaker grip, or dropping things
- Pain that's worse looking up or turning your head toward the sore side
Common causes
- A bulging or herniated disc in the neck
- Narrowed openings where nerves exit the spine, often from arthritis
- Long hours with your head forward
- An old neck injury
How chiropractic care may help
Dr. Carter will test your strength, reflexes, and sensation to see which nerve is involved and how irritated it is. Care may include gentle neck mobilization, traction-style techniques, and positions and exercises that take pressure off the nerve. If tests show the nerve is significantly compressed, he'll refer you for imaging or a specialist.
Get medical care right away if you have
- Weakness that is getting worse
- Trouble with fine hand movements like buttoning a shirt
- Symptoms in both arms, or problems with balance or walking
- Changes in bladder or bowel control
Shoulder pain
Aching or catching pain in the shoulder, especially reaching overhead, behind your back, or lying on that side.
Request a visitWhat it can feel like
- An ache at the top or front of the shoulder
- Pain reaching overhead or into a back pocket
- Stiffness and a smaller range of motion
- Pain lying on that shoulder at night
Common causes
- Rounded-shoulder posture that pinches the space in the joint
- Repetitive overhead work or sports
- Irritated rotator cuff tendons
- Pain referred from the neck or upper back
How chiropractic care may help
Shoulder pain doesn't always start in the shoulder. Dr. Carter checks your neck and upper back too. Care may include joint mobilization, soft tissue work, and exercises that strengthen the muscles that keep the shoulder blade in position. If a tear is suspected, he'll refer you for imaging.
Get medical care right away if you have
- Shoulder or arm pain with chest pressure, shortness of breath, or sweating. Call 911
- Being suddenly unable to lift your arm after an injury
- A visible deformity after a fall
- A hot, swollen joint with fever
Hip and SI joint pain
Pain low in the back near the dimples above the buttocks, or around the hip, often on one side.
Request a visitWhat it can feel like
- Pain just to one side of the base of the spine
- Pain getting up from a chair, climbing stairs, or getting out of a car
- Stiffness after sitting or first thing in the morning

Common causes
- A sacroiliac (SI) joint that moves too much or too little
- Tight or weak hip muscles
- Uneven loading from running, standing on one leg, or sitting cross-legged
- Pregnancy and the months after delivery
How chiropractic care may help
The first step is telling the SI joint, the hip joint, and the low back apart, since they can feel alike. Care may include adjustments to the pelvis and low back, soft tissue work, and exercises to strengthen the hips and core.
Get medical care right away if you have
- Being unable to put weight on the leg after a fall
- Sudden, severe groin pain
- A hot, swollen joint with fever
- Pain at night with unexplained weight loss

- Car commutes on I-95 and I-295 on top of desk time
- Little movement during the week
How chiropractic care may help
Care may include adjustments to the mid back, work on tight chest and shoulder muscles, and a short routine you can do at your desk. Dr. Carter can also walk you through a quick check of your workstation setup.

- Chest pain or pressure, or pain with shortness of breath
- Pain after a fall or crash
- Pain with fever or unexplained weight loss
- Pain that wakes you at night and won't ease with position changes
Arthritis and age-related stiffness
Stiff, achy joints in the neck and back that make getting moving in the morning harder than it used to be.
Request a visitWhat it can feel like
- Morning stiffness that loosens up as you move
- An achy neck or back after sitting still
- Less range when turning your head or bending
- Grinding or crackling sounds when you move
Common causes
- Osteoarthritis, the gradual wear of joint cartilage
- Discs that thin and lose height over time
- Less activity, which lets joints stiffen
- Old injuries
How chiropractic care may help
Chiropractic care can't reverse arthritis, but gentle, low-force techniques, mobility work, and a simple home routine may help you move more easily and stay active. Dr. Carter adjusts his approach for bone density and other health conditions, and home visits skip the hardest part for many people: getting in and out of a car when you're stiff.
Get medical care right away if you have
- Hot, red, swollen joints
- Morning stiffness lasting more than an hour with swelling in several joints
- Fever or unexplained weight loss
- New back pain after a minor fall, especially if you have osteoporosis

- A joint that is swollen, hot, or won't bear weight
- Pain after a hard fall or collision
- Numbness or weakness in an arm or leg
- Chest pain or shortness of breath during exercise
